In the application field of intelligent device and instruments, considering such factors as product volume, cost, etc., the computer control part is sometimes required to be installed inside the device with a space as small as possible. In these cases, the processor normally does not have much internal memory, let alone the external memory. The operating system is installed in this limited memory (normally in ROM). This kind of system is called Embedded System. It is the soul of the intelligent devices and instruments.

Hopen operating system is designed according to the requirements of embedded system. It is composed of a kernel whose volume is very small and some custom-built system modules. The normal size of Hopen Kernel is 20KB or so. It occupies a very small space even though other necessary modules are included, and it still retains such characteristics as real time and multitask. Due to its high flexibility, user can easily customize to satisfy the needs of their practical application.
